- My Offernda honoring Claudia Kyte and Linda Esquenda
- How challenging was this project for you? Be specific.
This project wasn't challenging at all. It was more of finding objects for my ofrenda. Items that belonged to the people in my ofrenda. I don't have that many but I did end up digging in my closets even more and finding some necklaces that both of my people owned. But other than that inconvenience the project was easy and enjoyable.
What did you enjoy most about this Cultural Connections project?
I enjoyed the learning of the the Aztecs. I have a Mexican background and it was cool learning about my background. Mostly in history classes in any schools you will learn mostly about American history. It was a unique learning experience that I hope to go through again. I believe it probably good for anyone that lives in California (especially Southern Cali) to learn about Mexican history because we live about thirty to an hour away from the Mexican border. This land where I live now used to be theirs! I did very much enjoy learning about the Mexican culture.
Did you receive critique and feedback from anyone (teacher, parent, classmate, etc)? If so, who? Was the feedback helpful? (This could be for any part of the project, illustrated journal, ofrenda, exhibition)
I got critique from everyone, and I mean mostly everyone. But I don't mind at all. Students pointed out how I didn't have any food and how I needed more of a personalized touch for the people in my ofrenda. Same with my mom, so I must thank everyone who pointed that out. It was very helpful.
What grade do you think you deserve? Why?
I believe I deserve an A because I turned in everything on time and I improved from my rough draft of my offered to what it looks like now. Improving is key to getting a good grade. If I didn't take the critique to heart I would probably give myself a C+ at most. But I met all expectations. Plus I stayed an extra thirty minutes at exhibition helping staff put away oferndas into cars and with that long walk to the HTHNC vans was practically death . (Waiting for that extra credit JK) I did enjoy helping out a lot at the exhibition.
If you could change something about this project, what would it be?
If I could change anything, maybe make sure students are taking this project seriously. Most students were and that was wonderful. But some students were complaining about not having anyone to do ofrendas on or they took it as a joke. In the Mexican culture this is a huge deal! It was kind of rude to see some people not take Dia Del Los Muertos seriously as it's meant to. Also I felt as the school exhibition wasn't really necessary, most people slacked off and most kids weren't interested in the offerendas but more in the face paints and coloring, which isn't bad! But our whole project was centered on the ofrendas. But other than that I have no critique. Very well put together project.
