Career Day Reflection
- What is Career Day at HTHNC? What is its purpose?
Career Day is a day where we don't go to school but instead shadow a person that professions in a topic we are interested in. The day of work might bring us more hope of that job in the future or others might not be as interested in the action as they thought they would be. - Describe where you went, who you shadowed, etc. (overview of your placement)
I went to shadow a Sociology Professor at CSUSM (California State University San Marcos) It's a a university that students from all of United States go to or even possibly the world. It's an impressive school and holds very powerful students. The university has a huge library and wonderful professors waiting for their new pupils. On the day I shadowed my professor the worst day was to. Graduation day, it was packed and traffic were miles long. Dr. Santos had me in his office and I got to work on filing reports and helping clean out old paper essay/reports from the students that year. I only got to watch the graduation for a short time. - Describe a typical work day at this site.
Usually it's a lot less stressful. Usually Dr.Satos says he likes to get a coffee in the morning to keep him awake in his morning classes. During the week Dr. Santos teaches two different classes two times a week. Dr.Santos is specialized in Gangs teaching and Criminology. - What are the business's general work policies (tardiness, absence, dress code, technology use, etc.)?
- What sort of tasks/activities are the people at this business participating in?
Mostly just helping students achieve their goals in life. A lot of people enjoy Mr. Santos teaching and how friendly he is around the students. - In what ways do you expect your high school classes and the skills you have learned to apply to this profession?
You have to get over stage fright. Dr.Santos lectures classes and is asked to be key note speakers at tons of events, even out of state. Another you have to a role model, these students will look up to you. - What sort of credentials/degrees did your mentor need to have in order to gain this job?
Ph.D. in Sociology, University of California-Santa Barbara (2012)
MA in Sociology, California State University-Dominguez Hills (2001)
BA in Sociology, California State University-Los Angeles (1998) - What new insight did you gain about working in the professional world by shadowing your mentor?
I wanted to see which students are more successful. Like how come this student got accepted in a university than another person who also applied. I just want to learn how does one student reach to the top and no one else doesn't. - Is this a career you are interested in pursuing? Why/why not?
I am intersted in this. Im not sure exactly how but I know it's a very important profession to each generation that decides to go to college. - What would you like to keep in mind for Career Day 2018? (What would you have done differently this year? What do you want to make sure for next year?)
I'm not exactly sure what I want to do. There are so many topics that seem interesting to me but so far nothing has stood out to me. I want to find that passion soon before I run out of time and when I start applying for colleges. So far I just going with the flow and just hoping fate will drop me off somewhere.
