My Diamonds
By Mariah Perez Subject matter: This print represents my love for my plants that I grow at home. I have a lot of succulents, flowers and fruit trees. I have recently grown into growing vegetables and berries! They are important to me because they bring me a lot of joy and it’s a fun hobby. Symbolism I decided to show my love of plants through the multiple plants on the print that I own, presenting the plants on a rack. On the racks are fairy lights, I thought it was a cute touch. I choose greens and blues and purples. I thought they all looked well together. I didn’t want clashing colors and patterns. I liked the simple coloring. As I said before I just made this print to represents my love for my plants that I have at home. I decided to name my piece my diamonds because I find my plants to be the same value as a diamond. Design and Techniques I designed my print how I imagine my backyard, we have different pots and gardens where my plants reside. My art teacher helped me with coloring a bit more, I was a bit stuck with coloring. I loved her idea which was coloring the plants before putting the stamp on the paper. I think it looks cute and I appreciated her help. It was very hard to layout the paint onto the ink exactly because it would get very messy. It took a lot of trial and error to get this piece which I’m proud of. Spanish Personification “I am life, I am the sun, I am free” “Soy la vida, soy el sol, soy libre” “The ‘fruit of hard work’ is a reward.” “El ' fruto del trabajo duro ' es una recompensa.” “Just as a seed produces a plant, so do our actions produce results.” "al igual que una semilla produce una planta, nuestras acciones producen resultados." |
In this project titled "Prints! Prints! Prints!" we got introduced to Printmaking. We got to design a stamp by hand and make a print. It took about three to four weeks, A lot of trail and error! We sketched ideas in our sketch books and soon put it onto our Soft Block stamps. Which we did a relief print which is a process consisting of cutting or etching a printing surface in such a way that all that remains of the original surface is the design to be printed. We had to use carving tools in creating our stamps. We used a Bench hook it hold our stamps while carving. When ready, we put our soft blocks on a piece of Plexi Glass. We applied block printing ink with a brayer onto our stamps and stamped a piece of paper. There were a bunch of different techniques we could have used such as the Chine Collé, a colored paper techniques, Where we used multiple pieces of paper on our print. Or we could have used A la poupée a hand coloring techniques. Where we could have used multiple different colors of ink on our piece. |
